GENERAL CHECKLIST

 

q Make flow chart for days/weeks before move.

q Make daily schedules

q Get estimates from moving companies and arrange method of payment.

q Get boxes of packing containers

q Notify post office and send out change of address to companies to inform of move:  Telephone, insurance, mail order clubs, book and record clubs, gas or fuel oil, electric company, property tax dept., laundry, newspaper, magazines, doctor, dentist, lawyer, community center, stockbroker, accountant, cable television, utilities, motor vehicle branch, vets, credit card companies, motor club

q Transfer or resign club or association memberships

q Sell, give away, discard unnecessary belongings

q Get letter of introduction to church, new clubs, bank, etc.

q Get school records for transfer to new school

q Make arrangements to move family, hotel reservations, plan tickets

q Get all medical, dental, birth, baptism and marriage record

q Transfer house, car, personal insurance records and check auto licensing requirements

q Check and clear tax assessments on your current property

q Ensure that your moving out and in days do not conflict with the two other parties involved

q Check storage facilities

q Collect and send out items to be cleaned or repaired

q Arrange to have meter read on moving day

q Make arrangements with caretakers if renting

q Use up perishable food

q Arrange to transport pets, plants, and perishables

q Clean rugs and drapes

q Arrange for work that has to be done in new house

q Get warranties and tips from previous occupants

q Plan for children and pets on moving day

q Get moving company appraisals of items for future claims

q Check swimming pool equipment

q Cancel cleaning women, pool maintenance, window cleaners, gardener and snow removal

q Leave house clean for new occupants

q Transfer prescriptions for drugs and eyeglasses

q Transfer government or private health and hospital plans

q Return library books

q Cancel or pass on subscription tickets

q Arrange for money during move period

q Transfer stocks, will, bank accounts, contents of safety box

q Ensure you have adequate insurance for goods in transit

 

COST CHECKLIST

 

q Check land transfer taxes

q Check tax increases, deductions and exemptions for the move

q If the company is moving your family, check what they will pay for: hotels, meals, movers, house hunting trips, transportation, moving insurance, storage, lawyers, loss on house sale or rent, mortgage penalty, real estate commissions, overlapping expenses, travel for spouse prior to move, housing policy

q Net revenue from selling or renting current home

q Cost of new home

q Check lawyer fees

q Check mortgage transfer

q Will there be an increase in mortgage costs?

q Will there be a lapse in paychecks during move?

q Check mover's fees

q Check other costs re: move, transportation, food, kennels, sitter

q Check living expenses in new community

q Will you need a second car?

q Check new land taxes and personal taxes/exemptions

q Maintenance and renovations to new home

q  Check real estate brokers fee if selling

q Check penalty if lease is broken if renting

q Will there be an overlap of mortgage payments?

 

 

PACKING CHECKLIST

 

q Get packing paper, pad for inventory, marking pens and boxes

q Heavy twine or masking tape

q Get boxes or containers

q Empty gas from lawnmower, outboard motors etc.

q Remove batteries from toys or appliances

q Mark cartons clearly as to contents and room to be put it

q Set aside things you will carry in car in carton marked Do Not Load"

q Mark cartons you want loaded last and unloaded first

q Tie or tape curtains rods, mops and brooms in bundles

q Point out and mark fragile or delicate items

q Carry money, jewelry, and valuable papers with you

q Do not overload drawers when packing items in dressers

q Liquids in bottles should have tops secured

q Blankets are best moved in large boxes, towels and pillows in dresser drawers

q Large mirrors, glass table tops, and valuable pictures can be crated

q Cartons weight should not exceed 60 pounds or 27 kilograms

q Pack lampshades in boxes by themselves

q Do not use newspaper to pack anything: the ink rubs off

q Do not leave shelves loose in fridge or stove

q Small appliances should be wrapped and packed in bottom of boxes

q Do not pack cleaning products in same box as food

q Table lamps should be packed

q Place heavy china items at bottom of box: all flat pieces should be placed on edge

q Small items should be packed in a small box inside a larger one

q Move clothes and drapes in a wardrobe supplied by the mover

q Do not roll mattresses or rugs, leave for movers (special cartons)

q Do not wrap furniture or tie with rope

q Large power tools should be dismantled for moving

q Leave furniture in place for movers to move

q Take down any fixtures fastened to wall

 

MOVING DAY

 

q Be on hand for movers

q Keep personal luggage away from movers

 

q Arrange for a few favorite toys for the children

q Put all valuables in a safe place

q Get floor plan for new house

q Arrange for supplies for transition period

q Make shopping list for first day

q Get keys to new home

q Remove trash

q Disconnect telephone

q Ensure doors and windows are locked

q Notify neighbors

q Heat turned down

q Have necessary papers, money, tickets, traveler's cheques with you

q Arrange for sitter on arrival

q Final check of basement, rooms, cupboards, attic and garage

q Keep copy of mover's inventory with you or in a safe place in case of serious loss or damage

 

ARRIVING

 

q Have children and pets elsewhere if possible

q Be on hand for movers

q Check off numbered boxes

q Check each carton for damage or loss

q List claims for damages

q Pay movers

q Check supply of heating fuel

q Unpack everything

q Get appliances hooked up

q Get utilities turned on and meter read

q Plan for the day's meals and ask neighbors for nearest restaurants

q Get kitchen and bedrooms set up first

 

INTERNATIONAL MOVE CHECKLIST

 

q Consult immigration office

q Get birth certificates

q Get vet certificates

q Arrange for language courses

q Check currency requirements

q Get duplicate keys for luggage

q Take copy of documents left behind

q Check import policies on cars, pets, plants.

q Check wardrobe if moving to a new climate.

q Get passports, visas and work permits
